Can you post a link to a Commodore page where they make this pronouncement officially?

Sorry, I can not post a link. The quote is from an email conversation with Commodore staff, and yes, they approved the posting of the message.

I guess that's that then. Jeri said as much last year at the DTVHacking forum.

When you say the C64 joystick you mean the one with all the games built in?

I think that is what he's talking about. I have on of those joysticks, haven't started hacking it yet.

The DTVHacking forum I mentioned earlier can be found here. That's a good place to visit if you're thinking about modding a C64DTV.

This is tough to explain. QVC was selling the 1st generation DTV in North America and then they showed up in KB Toys stores. Neither seems to have any at this point. The more desirable 2nd and 3rd generation DTVs are still available in Europe with the catch being that they're PAL. There is a 3rd generation NTSC device, the Hummer. It was sold through Radio Shack and they put them on clearance months ago. It's possible albeit unlikely that some stores still have them. There's always eBay. The big question is, do you want one as a collector's item, as something to play or something to hack?

For more information on the differences between the various DTVs and the Hummer, check out this site.

Yes, of course! How could I forget that (I got one from Toys R Us through a family member). It's a shame that the companies involved couldn't didn't treat the C64DTV's designer better because we could have had lots of neat products based around the ASIC. C'est la vie.

Is it possible to convert PAL units to NTSC?

I checked the site and there does not appear to be a mod for it. I know its just the frame rate that needs changed, and I would assume it is an easy fix.

Yes, PAL DTVs can be converted to NTSC (easy is relative.) However, there is only one source of the correct crystal and that's NTSC DTVs. :)

And ShopKo. I bought one at the Duluth, MN location sometime around May 2005, I think.
