The secret of Bastow Manor 64 game

This game has defied me for years. I get stuck up a dead tree trying to get into the manor and can't get down. So I can go no further. I know I have a pack, which can hold 5 items, but which is empty. I do not know how to collect any items. Has anyone else tried to play this game who could give me any clues to forward movement?
