Commodore.ca: The PET, VIC, 128, 64 & More Forum

This may be a bit long winded to read but here goes. I have owned my complete C64 and C128 systems since the mid 80's. I have owned the GEOS software since shortly after it was issued. I have GEOS V2.1 on disks as well as the accompanying applications. I recently acquired an original set of GeoPublish disks with manuals and want to use it with my GEOS V2.1 but of course I get the usual message "need the original version to install, boot with the original installed desktop/kernal?" or something to that effect. It's been so long since I heard about the work around for this and was wondering if someone could give me the information I need so I can make some use of the GeoPublish software. I love using GEOS and my machines as my retirement hobby and sure would appreciate someone pointing me to the solution. I am new to this forum as of today but will be here often to start catching up.

After a little further reading in the FAQ's, I remember that I need a "stripped" version of the GEOS Boot disk and was going to do that at one time but have lost the references I was going to use. I did get a set of the Kraker Jax (The Maverick v5) disks because I believe this is what I needed to help me with the problem with Geo Publish. Am I even on the right track here? My 1541 is also hard wired with the VG Data Shack 21 Second Backup (v4.1) but I can't remember if this helped me or not. I have never "pirated" copy protected software, only made back-ups of purchased software for my own archives and use. I used to combine The Newsroom, Geo Paint, Geo write, The Print Shop, and GEOS to make newsletters for my daughters school projects. I would now like to do that again for my grandchildren and hopefully use Geo Publish along with them.

I have found that with Maverick v5, you can "strip" the copy protection off of the one-disk version of Geopublish so that it will work with any GEOS boot disk. However, I've also found that Maverick *cannot* strip the copy protection off the two-disk version of Geopublish.

Which do you have?

Another dead end then, I have the two disk version of Geo Publish. I know they had to protect their software from copiers in days past but I sure wish they had not included this "install" with original boot disk for all new applications. I'll keep searching the Net and all of my copies of Loadstar I guess.

The other way is to find an uninstalled version of Geopublish. Then you can install GP to recognize your boot disk. Vendors, like Computer Station in Long Beach, California, and the 4-Jays in Pittsburg, California, may still have new-in-the-box Geopublish.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to look them up and see what's available. I'm in Canada though and would like to fund a Canadian supplier to save duty etc.

I don't know of any Canadian storefronts. However, perhaps the members of tpug.ca would know.

Well a bit long winded again but, PROBLEM SOLVED. After spending the past week surfing through all of my old Loadstar Disks, success. I have to give credit to the folks at LOADSTAR, they always came through. On Loadstar Issue #152 under GeosWare Disk 2 Side B is an article by Roger Detaille called Installing Geos. In the article Roger explains how to use Maverick V5 to make copies of your original GEOS V2 disks and then run the Maverick parameters to deprotect the copies so you can install your other applications ( such as GeoWrite, GeoPublish, etc.,) . They also supplied a copy of the program Trojan Killer by Jim Collette to make sure and deprotect all of the new copies of the desktop. I worked through his article today with my disks and voila, I now have a working copy of GeoPublish. My grandkids will be delighted with what we can do now.

Oh, I'll have to dig out that issue of Loadstar and investigate Trojan Killer. In addition to having never been able to deprotect the two-disk version of Geopublish, I've never been able to deprotect Geocalc 128. Thanks for the lead.
