Does Anyone Know What This Is?

It looks more to me like a Tape Drive and but it could be one of the old cartrige load cd drives.

Actually, the above statement is more of a guess than anything else - I THINK this is an optical drive, but I'm not entirely sure... I plugged it in, but nothing happens, and since I don't have a disk for this drive, I don't know if it actually works or not. This could be some kind of older cartridge drive, but I'm not familiar with it...
The equipment in this auction came from a liquidation sale of a major computer company that recently went out of business. This company primarily produced software, but also worked on all types of computer systems from the late 70's through the 90's...
