Commodore 64s Made In Canada

I've always meant to ask this: I have a Commodore 64 (breadbox) with a "Made in Canada" label on the underside, next to the serial number sticker.

Everything I've read / listened too / watched mentions the C64 being manufactured in the States, but not in Canada. Was there a Commodore assembly shop on this side of the border, or was this just a marketing thing (if a certain amount of the production budget - like packaging and shipping - was spent in Canada a company could claim "made in Canada" on their product)? Anyone know more on this subject?

Well, there was CBM Canada in Ontario.

Yes, but I'm not sure if they were actually manufacturing or just distributing machines in Canada - and maybe producing bilingual manuals, or something to this effect.

I'll try asking someone, like CBM engineer Bil Herd.

Thanks, Robert! :) It was just something I found curious, as I don't remember seeing any other "Made in Canada" labels on Commodore products.

Still no word back from Bil Herd, Andy Finkel, or Dave Haynie.

Hey, thanks for the update.

Here's a picture of my "Made in Canada" C64 breadbox...

Unfortunately, I was working on it the other day and the space bar stopped responding. Luckily I have a backup C64.
