Quick confirmation of "confused" 1541

I just got my 1541 delivered today and given that I have a C64 and all the cables, I figured I'd see if I couldn't get a disk working.

Well, after hooking everything up per the manual and getting both a power light and a short red light and some noise after inserting a disk, I tuned on the C64 and got another short red light along with the disk spinning. I expected this behavior.

But, anything that accesses device 8 seems to lock up the 64 and provokes no response from the 1541.

An attempt to format a dsdd disk (it's from my 800) gets the same response. As posted elsewhere in the forums and in the manual, I tried the following commands:

OPEN15,8,15,"N0:NAME,1":CLOSE15

and

OPEN 15,8,15:"N:NAME"

in an attempt to new the disk.

Even LOAD "$",8 hangs.

Any ideas? Bad cable, bad drive, bad 64? I don't have any other equipment to test with - Yet.

TIA for any advice.

Wholly

Bad cable, bad drive, bad 64?
One of our S. California members had the same problem. We replaced the 1541 drive with a working one. When it still didn't work right, we replaced the C64. Voila! Problem solved.

Thanks for giving me hope that I hadn't missed something obvious. My C128 and 1571 should be showing up soon.

Of course I could always pull out my multitester...

Well, the C128 showed up today with everything I needed to diagnose my issues with the 1541 and...

.. it was the drive. Replacing the machine and the cable made no difference. Swap in the 1571 and everything works great.

Bummer. But I do have a working machine now!
