8050 dual disk drive
Hi, I recently ( very recently ) picked up an 8050 dual drive, I have no pet to test it on, however it powers up, no error lights and both drives spin, interior looks fine, exterior a little chiped and scrated, but good for the age, I do not know much about them, esspecialy acurate value, but thought i would spread the word anyway, might be of use to someone out there, Im in the UK by the way.

8050 Drive
Thank you for the information concerning the drive. To the best of my knowlegde, everything made by Commodore for Europe runs on 220 current. Here in the United States we use 110, so the drive would be unuseable. May I suggest you try selling it on Ebay. You could probably get a couple of bucks for it there.

Old Commodore stuff used input line trafo's and linear regulators. I'd have to check to be sure but best case is that the existing trafo has an unused 220V tap (not uncommon for the era) which would mean a trivial mod. Worst case you'd have to come up with a suitable transformer - or an external solution which shouldn't be too horrible as IIRC the drives only required somewhere in the 30W range. Line frequency shouldn't be an issue - I seem to remember these drives DIDN'T use line derived motors as most 8" drives did.
Stranded in time. Surrounded by evil. low on gas.

transformer
What brand of external transformer do you recommend? How much do they cost? Where do you buy them? Thanks!

Mine is an AED VC-500. I am no expert but it works for me. I bought it based on the recommendation of two other C= types.

I think I paid about $50 for it.
I bought mine direct from AED because the had an office in Montreal and they were very helpful on the phone. However, you can source them from other sites or even local battery stores.
