Peddle/Herd/Haynie/Russell video for CommVEx v3

Post by rbernardo »

At the June 9 gathering of CBM engineers at the Vintage Computer Festival East, I was there with videocameras and still camera in-hand as was Dave Haynie with his semi-pro videocameras. We filmed Chuck Peddle during his video conference; specifically, I had two videocameras, one pointing at the screen with Chuck and one pointing at Bil Herd, Dave Haynie, and Bob Russell reacting and commenting while Dave had his videocamera locked down to record the general scene (I suppose). After everything was finished, Dave offered to edit all our tapes together to make one, grand, new C128 Animals video -- the one that is premiered every year at CommVEx. I accepted the offer.

However, time has passed; time is short until CommVEx. Dave is not responding to my e-mails, because the server that he uses (Bil Herd's server) is down. Also at this time, he may be camping in Arizona/New Mexico far away from civilization. Without any method of getting my videos to Dave, there is no way a well-done C128 Animals 2007 video will be ready by CommVEx time.

Therefore, I may have to present the raw footage of Peddle/Herd/Haynie/Russell talk, or I may have to roughly edit of the talk. It won't be as polished as a Haynie production, but at least, everyone will get to see and hear the CBM engineers.

After hours of editing on Friday night, I presented part 1 of the CBM engineers video on Saturday. More editing on Saturday night, and I had part 2 and 2.1 of the video running on Sunday. All told, almost 2 hours of video spread over 3 DVD-Rs. Before I start distributing these, I'll have to get that down to 1 or 2 DVD-Rs.

Contact made with Dave Haynie! I had to use an alternate e-mail address. I will snail-mail my CBM engineer videos to him today, and then he will combine them with his.

Still no word back from Dave in regards to his efforts at editing our videos together, even after sending Dave an inquiry e-mail the other day.

Received a response from Dave Haynie today. It goes like this:

I wrote:

> distributing the rough DVDs I have?

Working on it... I have yours and mine up in Vegas (the NLE),
synchronized, and starting the edit. This would have been sooner, but
my main editing PC had some brain surgery recently to replace a
defective DIMM module (ouch). But the good news is, with 4GB DRAM,
things are better than ever...

Editing should be done.. I'm rendering for DVD now, then a split for a
few YouTube uploads.

Yow! Go for it! I'm proud to announce that The first 2 parts of the Vintage Computer Festival East 4.0, starring CBM engineers Chuck Peddle, Bil Herd, Dave Haynie, Bob Russell, and a slew of admirers, is now up at http://www.youtube.com Just type in the search for hazydave and then look for VCF East 4.0 1/4 and VCF East 4.0 2/4. Dave Haynie, master video and audio editor, has combined his and my video footage to recreate this historic gathering of CBM talent.

Here is part of what Dave had to say:

Hey-

I'm starting to upload the VCF stuff to my YouTube "channel"
(channel "hazydave"). I broke it up into four parts, roughly 1/2 hour
each, to get around the 100MB upload limits on YouTube.

I'm also working on a very basic DVD... I rendered it yesterday,
but it came out a tad too large to fit on a DVD5, so I'm re-rendering at
a slightly lower bitrate.

[snip]

I used as much of my video as I had, mainly because your camera
had some weird sync effect ... maybe CCD vs. CMOS, I don't know. I did
have another tape from my "pocket" camcorder, but you had better
preliminary video, so I used that, and a tiny bit of coverage during the
interview when I had to change tapes.

[snip]

Thing is, this is a VERY cool interview... best one yet, far as
I'm concerned. Mr. Peddle pretty much confirmed everything I had heard
in story/legend around Commodore -- he is the true inventor of the
personal computer, as it came to be. Everyone else, from Apple to IBM,
just followed. That's a story that needs to be told again... it's so
easy for the winners to claim it all.. and that would annoy me even if I
didn't have problems with Apple.

YouTube.com now has the last 2 parts -- 3/4 and 4/4.

Still waiting for Dave Haynie to come out with the DVD version. However, he has linked me to an .avi version (better than YouTube quality).
