Maybe kind of a dumb question about joysticks...

Post by soupisgoodfood »

Is the keyboard on a C64/C128 supposed to act funny when joysticks are plugged in, or could this just be the result of using a Sega Genesis controller, rather than an Atari-compatible joystick? I know the genesis controller is somewhat, but not entirely compatible.

I don't know about genenis controllers, but if you plug in a C64 compatible joystick in PORT1 it will mess up keyboard functions if you use it.
The joystick ports are connected to the keyboard matrix, so this is normal.

Ech, I get it in both ports.

Lots of plugging and unplugging...

Using a Sega gamepad without modification is NOT reccomended on a C64. You could potentially damage the computer. There is some sort of modification you can do to use it safely, but the best option, in my opinion, is to use a standard Commodore/Atari joystick.

For more info on using the Sega gamepad with a C64, see these articles in the Commodore Knowledge Base:

I've done the mod to a Genesis controller. It's simple. Not as simple as buying a joystick intended for use on the Commodore though.
Call me Golan; my parents did.

Golan... Do you have the instructions for this mod? According to one of the CKB articles I referenced, the instructions are in an article in Commodore World issue #5... But I haven't been able to find a copy of this article anywhere... And it's not like I can go out and order a back-issue from CMD. Also... I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway... Does performing this mod on a Genesis controller make it useless on a Genesis?
