Evie Salomon, creator of the BackBit cartridge and other Commodore bits (!), has released the BackSID, a replacement for the 6581/8580 SID chip in the Commodore 64/128/64C/128DCR. BackSID auto-detects into which Commodore it is installed, and with an upcoming C64 configuration program, the user will be able to customize the settings and upgrade the firmware. Not only does BackSID offer good sound but also supports inputs, like mouse, paddles, and Koalapad. It does not offer audio pass-through. For more BackSID details, see

The BackSID is very reasonably priced at $32 US, not including shipping.
