VIC20 serial numbers

Post by Smiffy »

Hi all, first post & hoping someone can help?
I have acquired a VIC20 as it was my first experience of home computing & I wanted to find out a bit more about this unit... exact age if possible, where it was made etc. It's a nostalgia thing lol!

Anyway, I started with the serial number & guesstimate based on the number that it was probably a mid to late production, maybe from around 1982/83 (when I was just about to leave school), though I could be wrong. What is confusing me is that (from what I can gather) the serial number prefix & country of manufacture don't tally; ie 'WGB' prefix with country of manufacture being 'England'. From what I can find on the 'net WGB was a prefix only for W.Germany.

Were some WGB's produced in the UK? I can't imagine that the unit/label are fake.

Can anyone shed any light on the serial numbering of the VIC20?

Many thanks in advance :)

Hmm, as for its age, is it a VIC-20 that has a two-prong electrical input, or does it have a round DIN electrical input?

Happy New Year,

Hi rbernardo, thanks for replying.
The power socket is the DIN type.

Happy New Year to you too!

The DIN socket makes it a VIC-20CR (cost-reduced), so yes, it is a later VIC. As for WGB and serial numbering, I can't help you on that.

Truly,
