Accommodations for CommVEx v11 2015

Post by rbernardo »

Yes, I know it's very early to start thinking about next year, but here are a few insights I've made. In the past for the best deals, I've recommended watching our CommVEx venue's website, http://www.plazahotelcasino.com ; or http://www.hotels.com , or http://www.priceline.com , or the sites of nearby hotels. However, because Las Vegas hotel prices are up (especially with those "resort" fees that everybody is tacking on), it pays to shop wisely for a good price.

That's why I now recommend the sites, http://www.booking.com and http://www.trivago.com These two sites scan other hotel sites for the best prices. For the upcoming Classic Gaming Expo in September, I was able to book a Saturday night room at the former Las Vegas Hilton for under $36 (tax included) by using Trivago.com! Discount hotel chains, like Motel 6, Super 8, Travelodge, Howard Johnson, and others were $20, $30, $40, or more for the same night.

Friday and Saturday nights being the most expensive,

Well, after checking with Trivago.com, I found that none of the above hotels were in my price range or were too far away from the CommVEx venue of the Plaza Hotel. However, Trivago did point me to the Rodeway Inn, an ordinary-looking but comfortable hotel 3 miles away from CommVEx. I had stayed at the Rodeway Inn back in December and found it to be decent and quiet. (Actually, the Rodeway is across a large, unused, empty parking lot from the famous Riviera Hotel & Casino.) The inn even has a pool and a complementary breakfast.

Looking for better pricing, I went to the parent website of the Rodeway Inn, http://www.choicehotels.com There I found what I was looking for... a better price! Their Best Available Price at the site was pretty good, but their Senior/AARP Price was even better for the Rodeway Inn! With the latter pricing, for 5 nights (arriving on Wednesday, July 15, and departing on Monday, July 20), the total cost including tax was $211.63 (or roughly $42.33 a night).

I have booked with the Rodeway Inn,
Robert Bernardo

P.S. The Rodeway Inn does not charge a "resort" fee that many other Las Vegas hotels now apply, a fee that is pure profit.

I have been informed by our FCUG newsletter editor that the Plaza Hotel is now fully or nearly fully booked on the weekend of CommVEx. Thus, I advise all other CommVEx attendees to look for other accommodations.

Truly,

Hmm, our FCUG treasurer just booked his room today at the Plaza without any problem. Our editor may have had trouble, because he wanted four rooms, possibly all next to each other.

Rooms available again,

The CommVEx venue, the Plaza Hotel & Casino, charges a $15 a night resort fee. The various hotels near the Plaza charge a resort fee, too, except for the Four Queens Hotel, which still doesn't charge a resort fee.
