CBM 8050 not working

Post by ethos »

Hi all, I have a CBM 8050 that is having some issues. When powered on the stepper motors jitter and the three leds flash, I think twice between intervals. Physically everything looks good on the logic board, except for a little dust. Haven't yet done any real voltage checks, but was wondering if it could be a power problem. If anyone has had a similar experience and could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Update: Replaced the two 6502 cpu chips and work's just fine. Thanks to all who viewed this post, maybe I didn't post it in the proper place. If anyone has any idea where there is a more appropriate board or web site to post and read info on these old drives, please let me know.

Hi,

Glad to hear the good news !
IMHO this board isn't a wrong place for your post. I think the 8050 unit just too rare, especially now.
A self test is performed during the stratup of the drive unit, and the result is displayed as LED (all three) flashes.
If the LEDs are staying on, that could indicate microprocessor failure.

Yeah, indeed it is an old unit. Was given to me over 20 years ago. Used with a c64 connected with a Skyles IEEE Flash. Now that it is working, going to give it a complete clean-up. I kind of like to have older electronics working, appreciate them for what they were in thier day. Thanks for the reply, had the self diagnostic info, but had to get a couple 6502's from Jameco to try a swap to see if they were faulty. Just happy to have the drives working again.

Surprisingly many electronic and electromechanic devices from the late '70s and early '80s are still working today,
even if they were very complex at the time (meaning lot of discrete components were required to realize the
function). I'm often wondering about the lifespan of today's electronic equipment:
will they survive 30 years with the current design principles?
