Currently, our venue for CommVEx, the Plaza Hotel and Casino at 1 Main Street, has rooms for about $36 a weeknight and $75 for Friday or Saturday. http://www.plazahotelcasino.com or call toll-free (800) 634-6575. The Friday and Saturday pricing is up $22 per night (not including the $10 "resort" fee), compared to last year.

For those who want to compare hotel prices, go to

http://www.hotels.com

and you can specify "Fremont Street - Downtown Las Vegas" in order to narrow the search.

There may be better pricing on

http://www.priceline.com

There are other nearby hotels, the Main St. Station Hotel, the California Hotel, the Fremont Hotel, the Four Queens Hotel, the El Cortez Hotel, and others along the Fremont Street Experience.

One alternate hotel, El Cortez Hotel & Casino, 600 East Fremont, at the east end of the Fremont St. Experience, has weeknight pricing at $33 a night and $85 a night for Friday and Saturday. To check out the El Cortez Hotel, go to http://www.elcortezhotelcasino.com or call (702) 385-5200 or toll free (800) 634-6703 .

Happy New Year!

Today, a quick check on Hotels.com brought up these prices --

Golden Gate Hotel (right across the street from the CommVEx venue, the Plaza Hotel) -- $21 Su-Th, $39 Fri-Sat
The D Hotel (a few blocks from the CommVEx venue) -- $39 Su-Th, $49 Fri-Sat
The Four Queens Hotel (a few blocks from the CommVEx venue) -- $27 Su-Th, $74 Fri-Sat
El Cortez Hotel (at the other end of the Fremont Experience) -- $29 Su-Th, $75 Fri-Sat
The Plaza Hotel -- $32 Su-Th, $74 Fri-Sat

These prices do not include hotel tax or other fees.

I would choose the Golden Gate Hotel right now, except the noise from the Fremont St. Experience and its outside parking in the burning sun are turn-offs. The D Hotel has a similar noise problem (maybe slightly less because of its height above the street), but it does have a parking structure.

Truly,

Hmm, the hotels are charging a "resort" fee this year. :( Just like the airlines tacking on fees for anything, the hotels have started this. Here is what I discovered --

Golden Gate Hotel - $20/night
The D Hotel - $20/night
The Four Queens Hotel - no fee
El Cortez Hotel (at the other end of the Fremont Experience) -- $8.95/night
The Plaza Hotel -- $10/night

For those who prefer Motel 6, the nearest one to the venue is 4.6 miles away in a fairly safe area of east Las Vegas and near various supermarkets and department stores.

A Super 8 Hotel and a Howard Johnson Inn are on Las Vegas Blvd. about 1.2 miles to the south of the CommVEx venue. Ordinarily, I would recommend them as alternatives. However, the area of Las Vegas they are in may not be safe at night.

Just an insight. I stayed at the 4 Queens last year and it was great. Yes old - but the room was nice and the casino was great. Not to mention it's just a short walk to CommVex and you get to take in all that Freemont street has to offer along the way. (Which is quite humorous at all hours of the day.)

Yeah, it seems that I will booking the 4 Queens for the Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday; and for Friday and Saturday, it would be the Motel 6 with for their low Fri-Sat. price.

Arriving on a Wednesday instead of the Tuesday of previous years,

I've booked with El Cortez Hotel. A Travelocity e-mail discount coupon and the hotel's free parking garage swayed my decision and compensated for the hotel's resort fee. (The Four Queens has a surcharge for their parking garage.)

I'll be arriving on a Wednesday before CommVEx and will depart on Monday after the show.

Unless I hang around longer to attend
the Star Trek Convention the next weekend,

Hi Robert,

I'm booked at the Plaza Hotel and I will arrive Thursday to hang out with an old friend of mine who lives in Vegas. I can help out with setup too if needed before the start of the convention.

Hey folks. Yup, making it to CommVex for the first time!

I'm looking to share a room, anyone got space? Arriving Friday most likely, and leaving Sunday morning.

If I can get one of our FCUG members to attend CommVEx (he would be a CommVEx newbie), he could share with you. I'll ask him at this Sunday's FCUG meeting.

Now in Stockton, California,

Tim received an unbelievably fantastic deal for a hotel room through the Player's Club at the Plaza Hotel. Whereas, I paid over $230 for Wednesday through Monday at El Cortez Hotel, he received a Plaza Hotel e-mail offer which dropped the price to about $50 for Thursday through Monday at the Plaza! I'm signing up for their Player's Club.

Moving to the Day's Inn for my stay until Sunday,
