Hi, I'm new to the forum, so hello everyone. I have had an interest in 8-bit computing for a long time, 30+ years. I'm based in the UK, have several computers from the 80's, although I'd appreciate some advice on the following. I have what was a working 8096, when I bought it, it ran for just a few hours before emitting a loud cracking sound and smoke came from the computer. I removed the MB and where it was burnt, I think it's a capacitor but I'm far from sure, is marked on the board as Y1. Does anyone know of a source here in the UK or perhaps someone might provide some advice as to what 'Y1' actually is.
I'm not just here to leech some advice and to then disappear, amongst my collection are other Commodore machines, admittedly mainly C64 hardware, I also have a P500 too, so it's good to find there's still a common interest in these beasts, hope you can help, if not, thanks anyway for looking.

Hi,

Component IDs starting with "Y" are usually referring to crystals.
In case of 8096 MB "Y1" is a 16.000 MHz crystal.

But the real question remains: what caused it?
