Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, April 17

Post by rbernardo »

Happy April, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 10 a.m. to 1+ p.m., Sunday, April 17 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

Note the earlier meeting time - 10 a.m. instead of our usual 11 a.m start time.

In software we try the newest version of Jason "Pyrofer" Wright's 80-column C128 game, BoulderDash C128. For the C64, we'll go over the new Reset #08 magazine and its C64 coverdisk of games and demos. For the classic Amiga, we have the demo of the new game, Tanks Furry. For the VIC-20 with 24K RAM expansion, we look over the new game, Mah Jongg. For the Plus/4, it's the new game, Hugohunt.

For the hardware part of the meeting, we'll cover the various bits from the collection of Gerald Oborn, hardware like an extremely early motherboard version of a C64 housed in a VIC-20 case, a C128 with the Utilities Unlimited Super Chip, and an Amiga 500 with a v8 motherboard plus Kickstart 3.0.

Once again we'll watch newly-released video documentary, "Growing the 8-Bit Generation" -- this time part 3.

Next SCCAN meeting - Saturday, May 14

Post by rbernardo »

Happy Mother's Day, C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, May 14, from 2 to 4+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

This month we'll look at an Amiga 500 with the late v8 motherboard and 2 megs of Chip RAM. Also clear the decks! I'll need lots of table space for an Amiga 2000 with Video Toaster running v4.3 software, a '040 Progressive Peripherals & Peripherals accelerator with 4.5 megs of RAM, a GVP HC+8 RAM board with 8 megs, a Commodore 2065 Ethernet board, and more.

In the 8-bit area, we'll look at a Ray Carlsen-modded VIC-20 which has been hacked to provide S-video. We'll also have the usual C128, SX-64 and Plus/4 units with various programs.

Speaking of video, we'll examine a composite/s-video-to-HDMI converter that was used at the Commodore Vegas Expo last year. Who wants to bring a small HDMI monitor? :)

We'll view another part of newly-released video documentary, "Growing the 8-Bit Generation".

Bring anything else you wish to share!

Sincerely,
Robert Bernardo

Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, May 15

Post by rbernardo »

Happy May, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2+ p.m., Sunday, May 15 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

For discussion, we'll have the latest news of Commodore and Amiga at the May 20-22 Maker Faire 2016 and the July 30-31 Commodore Vegas Expo v12.

Once again, we'll cover the various bits from the collection of Gerald Oborn, like MSD SD-1 and SD-2 disk drives and various, classic Commodore and Amiga software packages. Due to popular demand, we review another FCUG Disk-of-the-Month from 1991... yes, that's right... from 25 years ago! Hopefully, v.p. Roger will bring in the Chalkboard PowerPad with program, Leo's Links, and give us an update on refurbishing the hardware. For the VIC-20, we get to try out the Behr-Bonz 2015 cartridge from Francois "Eslapion" Leveille of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 127 VIC games on one cartridge! Even more for the VIC-20, we have the full cassette/disk version of the very fun shooter, "Pulse." As mentioned by a Pulse player, "Beware the Space Turkey!"

Last but not least, we'll watch part 4 of the video documentary, "Growing the 8-Bit Generation."

Plus news of another documentary about Jack Tramiel,

Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, June 12

Post by rbernardo »

Happy June, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2+ p.m., Sunday, June 12 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

Note that our meeting is one week earlier than usual.

During lunch, we'll watch part 5 of the video documentary, "Growing the 8-Bit Generation."

For discussion, I'll have a summary and photos of the Commodores and Amigas at the the May 20-22 Maker Faire 2016. Then we'll have more discussion of the July 30-31 Commodore Vegas Expo v12 and the August 6-7 Vintage Computer Festival.

For the third month in a row, the Chalkboard PowerPad returns, this time with the C64 paint program, Leo's Lectric Paintbrush. If member Louis M. agrees, he may bring back his ZoomFloppy for all to see. For the VIC-20, we look at the improved, corrected/fixed games from Rob "GreyGhost" -- Tunnel Run, Towers of Hanoi, Sammako, Critical Mass, and Omak. For the Plus/4, it's the classic Graphic Tools (NTSC) disks from Jim Hehl. For the Amiga 1200 newly-autographed by William Shatner, we look at games which were installed by Duncan M. and which were a big hit at Maker Faire.

Don't forget to bring in any hardware items for C= repair technician Ray Carlsen to repair; I plan on seeing him in early July.

Sincerely,
Robert Bernardo

Hey Robert,

I recently acquired a Chalkboard PowerPad with Leo's Lectric Paintbrush and a music program. Unfortunately both of the carts are dead... very bad luck i guess. Do you know where to get the software for these? I can't seem to find it online anywhere.... A crt or d64 would do, as I have a 1541Ultimate2.

Thanks for any help!

Really would be nice if we had URL's for all the clubs, should they, in fact, have a "web presence" at all...

Happy 4th of July, C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Sunday, July 10, from 2 to 4+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

Notice that the meeting is on Sunday, instead of our usual Saturday.

This month we'll look into the Kim Uno, a modern implementation of the KIM-1. Also we'll have the VIC-20 with the Behr-Bonz multi-cart (which is full of classic games). The Amiga 1200 returns, this time with newly-installed WHDLoad games, like RodLand and Fightin' Spirit. We'll also have the usual SX-64 and Plus/4 units with various programs.

Just a few weeks until the July 30-31 Commodore Vegas Expo and expect a lot of discussion will revolve around that.

Happy almost CommVEx time, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2+ p.m., Sunday, July 24 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)

Note that our meeting is one week later than usual.

During lunch, we'll finish watching the video documentary, "Growing the 8-Bit Generation." Also we'll also watch the trailer for the new Viva Amiga film.

For discussion, everybody will have a chance to give their last suggestions/comments/observations before the July 30-31 Commodore Vegas Expo v12. Also I'll have an oral report and photos from my trip to the Pacific Northwest which includes a visit to C= repair technician Ray Carlsen and a visit to the Commodore 64 Users of Greater Victoria (a.k.a. ViC 64), the C= club of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

For the fourth month in a row, the Chalkboard PowerPad returns, this time with the music-composing program, MicroMaestro. For the VIC-20, we look at the Micro Vicious, a music synthesizer. From the Amiga 1200, we'll play some sweet MOD tunes. For a change of pace, we'll try out the new Pac-man clone, Pac-Pac for the Plus/4. We'll also punch the buttons on the Kim Uno, a modern clone of the classic KIM-1.

Happy August, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2+ p.m., Sunday, August 21 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

For discussion, we'll summarize this year's Commodore Vegas Expo, talk about this October's Amiwest Show in Sacramento, and plan for next year's new show, the Pacific Commodore Expo NW.

Then we'll do a bit of Net-surfing, peeking at CommVEx 2016 photos and taking a gander at ten, different, CommVEx 2016 videos.

On the hardware side, we'll examine a European (PAL) VIC-20. On the software side, if I can get his disks in time, we'll try out some C128 programs created by long-distance club member, Ricardo Quesada.

Next SCCAN meeting - Saturday, Sept. 24

Post by rbernardo »

Greetings from cool and cloudy South Australia, C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, Sept. 24, from 2 to 4+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

For this meeting, I bring in Trevor Dickinson's video made for the Sydney Amiga User Group and the Amiga User Group of Victoria (Melbourne), and also we'll see Trevor's presentation at the September 16 Adelaide Amiga & Retro-Computing Event. Trevor Dickinson is the head of A-EON, the company which produces the AmigaOne X1000 and the AmigaOne X5000.

Taking the cue from my Australian C= buddies, we'll try out the relatively new, modded, C64 games from Nostalgia - Commando Arcade SE (based on Commando) and Ghosts'n Goblins Arcade (based on Ghosts'n Goblins). As usual, we'll also have a VIC-20, Plus/4, and Amiga 1200 for members' use.

Bring anything else you wish to share!

Post by rbernardo »

G'day, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2+ p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

For discussion, I will report on my travels to the Sydney Amiga User Group, the Adelaide Amiga & Retro-Computing Event, and the Amiga User Group of Victoria (Melbourne). In keeping with the Australian theme, we'll look at the latest Reset (C64) magazine, and the GEOS/C64/C128 booklets from Jane M. Voskamp (JMV Graphics).

In software, we'll try to run the C64 disks, Aussie Games (think Summer Games/Winter Games).

Though not confirmed, we may have a special guest - coming all the way from Sacramento, Chris Brenner who developed the classic Digimaster 64 audio-capturing software. He wants to talk about a special FPGA project of his.
