Next SCCAN meeting - Saturday, April 28

Post by rbernardo »

Happy National Superhero Day (April 28), C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, April 28, from 2 to 5+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

Note that the meeting is April 28, not the usual second Saturday of May.

Because our next meeting won't be until July, if you have any item that needs Ray Carlsen's repair services, give it to me at the meeting, and I'll give it to Ray when I pass by his place on the way to the Seattle Pacific Commodore Expo in June (see below).

More freebies will pour in, courtesy of John Y. of The Other Group of Amigoids (San Jose), Rolf M. of Ventura, and Thomas M. of our club! Grab what you can!

We'll talk about the past April 14 Livermore Innovation Fair, the upcoming May 18-20 Bay Area Maker Faire (San Mateo), the June 9-10 Pacific Commodore Expo NW (Seattle), and the August 11-12 Commodore Vegas Expo. We'll also talk about some leads on organizing a C= event in southern California.

I'll bring in the SX-64 with the WiFi64 modem from SharewarePlus of England and a selection of games. Also the Amiga 1200 returns with some of the latest games and demos from late 2017.

As always, bring in any Commodore/Amiga hardware and/or software you wish to share!

Truly,
Robert Bernardo

Happy Upcoming 3-Day Weekend, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, May 27 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month I'll have a report on last weekend's Maker Faire Bay Area, and we'll discuss the plans for the June 9-10 Pacific Commodore Expo NW in Seattle.

Last month we ran out of time to look over some of the library disks of the CIVIC 64/128 club of Ventura, California and the Diablo Valley Commodore User Group of Walnut Creek, California. Not this time! Because it is the 20th anniversary of Wheels 64/128, the compatible OS for GEOS, we'll watch an on-line video of it in operation. For the VIC-20, we'll run the new game, Pyrotech, and the new demo/game, Dr. Ultra + Snake. For the Plus/4, we'll have the disk magazine, Lone News 21. For the C128, we'll try out Manic Miner 128.

In hardware, I'll show off the relatively-inexpensive SD2IEC from Jason Micari of Australia. Then we'll try out the hit of the Sunday Maker Faire, the Tech Sketch Music Port, software and a large keyboard that connects to the user port of the C64, advertised as a "music synthesizer and multi-track recording system". The Amiga 2000 returns with its 68040 board @ 28 MHz, DKB MegAChip for 2 meg Chip RAM, 40 megs Fast RAM, Video Toaster, OS 3.1, and dual disk drives, this time upgraded with the latest WHDLoad and more games, courtesy of the installation work of Duncan MacDougall of The Other Group of Amigoids.

Happy Father's Day, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, June 17 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month I'll report on last weekend's Pacific Commodore Expo NW in Seattle, and we'll see the photos and some video from that show. We'll also talk about a new opportunity to show off our computers at the DTLA (DownTown Los Angeles) Maker Faire on December 1.

At our last meeting, we had a demonstration of the Tech Sketch Music Port keyboard, and continuing in that musical theme, I bring back the Guitar Hero guitar with its Playstation-to-Commodore adapter and its program, Shredz64 (a big hit at PaCommEx). For the VIC-20 we'll try out the new commercial games, Down! and Mayhem, from Revival Studios. For the Plus/4 it's "Faces in HFLI", a hi-res slideshow of famous people. For the C128, Tempest returns along with the SuperCPU 128 needed to run it. For the classic Amiga, we try out some club disks from The Other Group of Amigoids.

Happy World Cup, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, July 15 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month is the our meeting before the Aug. 11-12 Commodore Vegas Expo! I'll be drumming up ideas, just in case we have forgotten anything! Also "Bernardo Studios" opens up in Fresno right after the meeting so that any presentations can be filmed for CommVEx. :)

In honor of the World Cup football (soccer), we'll try out the VIC-20 game, ASCII Striker. Shoot goals! Unrelated to soccer is the VIC-20 game, Escape. For the C64, we'll have a new version of Monopoly, Exploding Fish, and a look through the newest programs from Reset Magazine. Also, we'll go flying with Flyerfox, Falcon Patrol, andFalcon Patrol II (thanks to the VIC64 club of Victoria, BC, Canada for the ideas). For the Plus/4, we'll see the part 1 of the latest YouTube video of Bil Herd explaining the machine. Then from Germany, we have a Giga-CAD system for the C64 and Amiga Demomaker for the classic Amiga.

Brush up on reading German,

Happy National Junk Food Day, C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, July 21, from 2 to 5+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

The Commodore Vegas Expo is just around the corner on August 11-12. We'll be discussing our plans for the show! Also I will tell what happened at the May Maker Faire Bay Area and the June Pacific Commodore Expo NW.

I'll be coming in from Ventura, after visiting Rolf M. and picking up 3 1701/1702 monitors. The monitors are free for anyone in the club! Also as stated in an e-mail, member Mario plans "to bring back all the stuff... left from what Thomas gave... to give away. There are two big boxes of miscellaneous parts, accessories, cables, PSU, Amiga books and documentation + 3 unbranded computer cases."

In April I wrote:

> We'll also talk about some leads on organizing a C= event in southern California.

After leaving Rolf's place but before I come to the meeting, I'll cruise by HexLab Makerspace in Chatsworth. https://www.hexlabmakerspace.com/ It's only about 3 1/2 miles west of our Northridge Panera Bread meeting venue.

The Ray Carlsen re-repaired SX-64 returns to the meeting with a selection of games on a new SD2IEC drive from Jason Micari of Australia. Naturally, the VIC-20 and Plus/4 make an appearance, too, as does the Amiga 2000.

As always, bring in any Commodore/Amiga hardware and/or software you wish to share!

Happy almost Labor Day, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, August 19 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month I'll give a full report on the Aug. 11-12 Commodore Vegas Expo. In addition, we'll talk about the upcoming Amiwest Show in October.

Speaking of CommVEx, we'll look at a video or two that was filmed at the show. In addition, I'll break out the SuperCPU in order to use the 3D Construction Kit for the C64 (which I had presented at CommVEx). Vice-president Roger may have more to show us on last month's program, the German C64 CAD program, GigaCAD. The Amiga 1200 returns with its WHDLoad games.

We'll also have leftover, freebie, gift bags from CommVEx. Don't forget to grab one at the meeting!

Not a crowded agenda this time,

Happy end of summer, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, September 16 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month we'll talk about the Oct. 13-14 Amiwest Show in Sacramento and the Dec. 2 Downtown L.A. Maker Faire. Then it's time to hark back a few
months when we watch the video of the CBM engineers' panel discussion at The Commodore Story movie premiere which was at the Computer History
Museum in Mountain View.

Like last month's meeting, we'll have the SuperCPU 128 to use with the 3D Construction Kit game, A Chance in Hell. Unlike last month, we'll use SCPU 128 v.1A instead of the SCPU 128 v.1B, the latter not working at the August meeting (ooo, running A Chance in Hell at 1 MHz. took a looong time!). Steven Flanagan, author of A Chance in Hell, just sent over v1.1 of his game which is now further bug-fixed and enhanced for the SCPU. Steven also sent the 3D Kit Game, the original demo game which came with 3DCK but which he has enhanced for the SCPU.

Like last month's meeting, we'll look over arguably the best C64 CAD program, the German Giga-CAD Plus. Unlike last month, this time we'll have Giga-CAD Plus itself modded with SuperCPU patches and with a printed, Google English translation of the manual (that took many hours per day to drop it into the translator and then drop the translation into a Word file with proper formatting). V.P. Roger has been working hard on learning the intricacies of Giga-CAD, likening it to an early version of Blender. And don't worry... I'm slowly working on cleaning up the Google English of translation into that of North American English. :)

For fun, we'll have the new VIC-20 games, Spikes, Defense Shield, Alien Invasion, and Cavern Explorer. Also we'll play around with games for the Amiga CD32.

Truly,

Happy Beginning of Fall, C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, September 22, from 2 to 5+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

I'll be coming in with maybe the last of Rolf M.'s hardware he is giving away - Commodore odds and ends and a 1702 monitor.

Discussion will center around the October 11-14 Amiwest Show and the December 2 Downtown L.A. Maker Faire. Also I'll report on the Commodore Vegas Expo held back in August.

At the upcoming meeting, we may have two Amiga Video Toaster systems to look through! I'll bring in the Amiga CD32 system used at CommVEx. Also there will be two SuperCPU 128's, one fully working and one not working. Perhaps you guys can diagnose the non-working one. :) With the working SCPU, we can play around with the 3D Construction Kit and some SuperCPU'ized games, the 3D Demo Kit game and A Chance in Hell.
As always, bring in any Commodore/Amiga hardware and/or software you wish to share!

FCUG picnic lunch - Sunday, October 21

Post by rbernardo »

Happy Halloween, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next annual picnic lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, October 21 at --

The Elbow Room
731 W. San Jose Ave.
Fresno, Calfornia 93704
(559) 227-1234
http://www.elbowroomfresno.com

Treasurer Dick Estel says that we "should be able to have a quiet table there on a Sunday. They have a brunch 9 to 2. Of course, we can order from the menu also."

Because it is our picnic lunch, all club members and their families will have their meal paid by the club. We'll talk (not necessarily about computers), we'll eat, and we'll enjoy ourselves!

Happy Thanksgiving, C= and Ami comrades!

The next meeting of the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network is Saturday, November 17, from 10 to 1+ p.m. at

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California
(818) 407-9400

Note the earlier meeting time, because I have to be at the orientation for the Downtown Los Angeles Maker Faire later in the day.

Speaking of the Dec. 1 DTLA Maker Faire, we will be discussing what hardware and software to show off at our table there. Also we will be discussing our two tables that we'll have at the second annual Retro City Festival happening on January 5-6! http://retrocityfestival.com/ Thanks to Jason for getting us into that festival in Pomona!

In the previous meeting, there was talk of bringing in a Pi1541 for us to see, so if you have it ready, let us see it! Mario will be bringing back my A2000 that was last seen at CommVEx; we'll have the use of that. And if I can persuade Mario, he may bring along the disk(s) of the newly-released Barbarian Plus (see http://www.indieretronews.com/2018/07/b ... amiga.html) As usual, I'll have a SX-64 (newly refurbished by Ray Carlsen), VIC-20, and Plus 4.

As always, bring in any Commodore/Amiga hardware and/or software you wish to share!

Happy Thanksgiving, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, November 18 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month we'll talk about the Dec. 1 Downtown Los Angeles Maker Faire and the new-to-us January 5-6 Retro City Festival in Pomona. Our sister club, the Southern California Commodore & Amiga Network, will be showing off Commodores and Amigas at both events. We'll also talk about the new GEOS Megapatch 3.3, PLATOterm, the 64 Mini incompatibilities, and the Ultimate 64 delays. For your viewing entertainment, we'll watch a few choice minutes from the banquet presentations of the October Amiwest Show.

At the September meeting, we played around with the 3D Construction Kit games, A Chance in Hell and the 3D Kit Game, though we didn't devote enough time to the latter. Well, Steven Flanagan has updated the 3D Kit Game so that the upper corners of the game are more visible (the former SuperCPU version of it had the corners obscured). So, we will try out this new version with the SCPU... but Steven warns us that the game is much harder that A Chance in Hell. :)

On the rest of the software front, we'll have new/updated/compiled programs: VIC-20 – Chinese Patience, Morse, Innuh's Pyramid; C64 – Shadow Switcher, Great Giana Sisters 30th Anniversary, Scuttlebutt-Behind Enema Lines, Knightlore, Tower of Rubble 64, Hibernated 1-This Place Is Death, Limbo Preview; Plus/4 – Neon Nights HFLI, Cross Chase, Zombie Calavera Prologue; Amiga CD32 – various CD32 compilation discs.

If you have anything for Ray Carlsen to repair, give it to me, because I'll soon be traveling up to his house in the Pacific NW.

Truly,
Robert Bernardo

P.S. Food for thought. In our December meeting, we always donate money from our treasury to a charitable cause. For the last several years, it has been to the St. Jude Children's Hospital. However, this year with the disastrous fires in California, we should think about donating to help those affected by the fires.

Merry Christmas shopping, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, December 2 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

Note the changed meeting date.

This month I'll report on Dec. 1 Downtown Los Angeles Maker Faire and talk more about the January 5-6 Retro City Festival at the Fairplex in Pomona. We'll have officer elections and the vote for our annual charity donation.

Member David may be presenting his 64 Mini, so we will have a chance to play those games that come pre-loaded in that device. Other than that, the theme is... Christmas! We'll be trying out a bunch of C64 Christmas games -- Father Christmas, Santa's Christmas Caper, Special Delivery-Santa's Christmas Chaos, Frosty the Snowman 2, Frosty the Snowman 2 Turbo, Santa's Boulder Dash Party, Bah Humbug!, Santa Clues, and more. Also we'll have Wolfenstein 3D (o.k., that's not Christmas!) for the SuperCPU. Don't worry if those games won't run on our club NTSC C128, because I'll bring a PAL C64. For the VIC-20, we'll have a Christmas demo or two,

The Amiga CD32 returns with the many discs that we haven't tried, and the Amiga 2000 returns, too.

If you have anything for Ray Carlsen to repair, give it to me, because on Dec. 12 I'll be traveling up to his house in the Pacific NW.

Panera Bread Restaurant
19662 Nordhoff Street
Northridge, California

We'll talk about DTLA Maker Faire which was on Dec. 1 and the Retro City Festival which was last weekend. Both shows tiring but exciting!

In hardware, I'll bring in the Ultimate 64, and if member Bogdan brings his, then there will be two Ultimate 64's for us to examine! If member Mario brings in the Amiga 500 v8, we can play around with that one, too. Naturally, we'll have a VIC-20 and Plus/4, and we can run some of the programs that just came out for them, like Digiloi for the Plus/4 (shown at the Retro City Fest). Then there are the strange and mysterious bits to see, like the classic Indus GT disk drive for Commodores and the Plus/4 joystick adapters from AmigaKit.

As always, bring in any Commodore/Amiga hardware and/or software you wish to share!

Happy Martin Luther King Day, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2:00+ p.m., Sunday, January 20 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

This month we'll talk about the very busy January 5-6 Retro City Festival and other upcoming events with Commodores and Amigas.

The 64 Mini returns, and also the new Ultimate 64 (http://ultimate64.com) will be presented. We'll throw a battery of game and productivity apps at the U64 to see how good its emulation/simulation is. Speaking of productivity, in September 2018, it was the 20th anniversary of Wheels, the alternate operating system to GEOS, and so to honor that anniversary, we'll have a look at Wheels in control of GEOS apps (Roger, bring the club 1581 disk drive and 1351 mouse).

In other software matters, for the C128 we'll try out the recently-updated C128 text adventure games, A Mind Forever Voyaging, Trinity, Bureaucracy, Beyond Zork, and Leather Goddesses of Phobos. The VIC-20 that was supposed to be used at the Retro City Fest failed, and so, if Roger brings in his VIC-20, we'll try out the latest programs for that. Also from the Retro City Fest comes the Plus/4 with the show's two popular games, Zombie Calavera and Digiloi.

The Amiga 500 v8 makes its first appearance at our meeting, along with a bunch of the newest games and demos on disk.

If you have anything for Ray Carlsen to repair, give it to me, because around March 23 I'll be traveling (again) to his house in the Pacific NW.

Truly,
