The contents of FTP.FUNET.FI:pub/cbm directory (also available as http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/) This directory is the main European supporter of software for Commodore Business Machines' 8-bit computers. If you are outside Europe, please try our mirror site at sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/micro/commodore (United States of America) to avoid net traffic. Other major Commodore sites include ftp.jbrain.com (United States of America) ftp.giga.or.at (Austria, Europe) 0. GENERAL INFORMATION Most of our files are documented, so you don't have to download everything to find out if it was worth downloading. In each directory in the /pub/cbm structure, there is a file called 00INDEX that contains a brief description of the files in that directory. The WWW interface (http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/) also displays these descriptions. 1. GETTING STARTED It might be wisest to first download the ALLFILES file from this directory, or the 00INDEX files from those directories you are interested in. The /pub/cbm/ALLFILES file contains the information of all 00INDEX files under the /pub/cbm tree. The major sub-areas (e.g. vic20, c64, c128 etc.) have their own ALLFILES listings that do not include other areas. 1.1 WWW Interface If you have access to the World Wide Web, you may want to take a look at http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/ALLFILES.html. It is a master index of this file area. It contains all descriptions from the 00INDEX files and provides links for all subdirectories and files. If you are interested in a particular machine, e.g. the VIC-20, you may prefer to use e.g. http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/vic20/ALLFILES.html instead. 2. DOWNLOADING When downloading the files, you have to take some precautions. If you are not familiar with some file types you encounter on our site, you should read the files /pub/cbm/README.FILETYPES and /README.FILETYPES. 2.1 WWW Interface To download a file, you have to use your browser's "Download link" function. Otherwise it will often be displayed on screen as binary garbage. In Lynx, use the "d" key to save a link. You will be prompted for alternatives. Choose "Save to disk" and confirm the filename. In graphical browsers, there usually is a menu command File/Save Link. Use it, and select the file format "Source", in order to avoid any conversions. If your operating system has some filename limitations, you may also need to rename the file. In Netscape, you can also click the right mouse button on a link and select "Save Link" from the pop-up menu. When you are prompted for the file format, choose "Source". NOTE: Some Windows versions of Netscape don't have this option, and they will always perform an LF->CRLF translation on files that don't have common binary file suffixes (e.g. .zip, .tar, .gz). DON'T USE WINDOWS NETSCAPE TO DOWNLOAD FILES, unless you know that it works. Use an FTP client (e.g. WS_FTP) instead, or a Web browser that does not mangle the files. 2.2 FTP Interface Use BINARY mode when transferring the programs. We recommend NcFTP which does e.g. automatic login, and transfers all files in binary mode. FTP clients with pretty Windows or OS/2 user interfaces can cause lots of problems. They won't let you issue all commands that are available in NCSA FTP or NcFTP, and they don't show the return codes of the FTP server. Also, you will never be sure if you are transferring in binary or in ASCII mode. 2.2.1 Mass downloading If you really want to download e.g. all VIC-20 stuff, then you can make use of the "GET directoryname.tar" feature of the FTP server. It is not necessarily enabled in all directories, though. 3. UPLOADS If you have some software that you would want to upload here, follow the instructions in /pub/cbm/incoming/README.UPLOADER. It is a good idea to notify us about the uploads, so that they will be processed faster. Also, the uploads should always be described (e.g. what the program does). 4. PROBLEMS AND FEEDBACK If you have any problems accessing our site, or if you would like to give us any feedback, you can reach us via e-mail at cbm-adm@lists.funet.fi. If you are asking about a problem, please be as specific as possible. Use the full pathnames, e.g. /pub/cbm/README, and tell us what system you are using, if the problem could be system-dependent. 27th January 1997 Marko Mäkelä (Marko.Makela@HUT.FI) /pub/cbm maintainer (owner of VIC-20, C64, C128, plus/4)
