Spoke to Craig Ernster at the Emergency Chicagoland Commodore Convention on Saturday. At ECCC he had two presentations on copy-protection, and he showed off seldom-seen hardware and software. For CommVEx v3, he wants to bring an expanded presentation on copy-protection to CommVEx. He'll also bring more hardware/software to show off and to give away. It seems that we have our first presenter to sign up!

Barring unforseen hospital assignments, Cameron Kaiser will be presenting at CommVEx v3.

The second one to sign in,

Our newsletter editor, Lenard Roach, wants to make a presentation or two for CommVEx. One presentation on his son's battery pack for the SX-64 and a possible presentation on his book, "Run/Stop Restore".

Due to other committments, Lenard Roach may not be able to make CommVEx this year. However, two new guests are planning to attend -- Andrew Wiskow of the Cottonwood BBS and Charles Gutman of 8-Bit Designs. Both are eager to attend and schmooze with fellow Commodorians. Andrew will speak of C= BBS matters, and Charles will demonstrate and sell C= items from 8-Bit Designs catalog. Charles also plans to have special t-shirts for the occasion and ask for ideas on what new C= items to develop.

The GABE.U.PAK.64 and Book ...

Hi,

Robert seems to make a big deal about these two items I have worked on over the years for the Commodore. I don't think it's too much. It's something that anyone with know-how and writing skills can do, but I will be glad to talk to anyone about either the GABE.U.PAK.64 or the book "Run/Stop-Restore." I haven't discussed these items with anyone for quite a while, so if anything, give me a chance to think up what it is you want to talk about.

Here are some tantalizing clues that Charles left on comp.sys.cbm tonight:

Just got off the phone with Jeri Ellsworth. She will be coming to CommVEx this year (and going to the Classic Gaming Expo, too, when she's not at our show).

I'm planning on presenting a couple items at CommVEx this year... First of all, I'll have a table set up with my 128D connected to my HP Laptop, which will be available for anyone to use to access any of the great Commodore BBS's. I plan to have this setup to help introduce people to Telnet-accessable Commodore BBS's, as well as an on-hands display of how the setup works to call these BBS's from a real Commodore computer. At this same table, I'll have a stack of the most recent C64/128 BBS List printouts available for anyone who wants one.

In addition, I'll be giving a presentation on the use of Kaleidoscope v4, arguably the BEST Commodore graphics editor for the C64, which can be used to create graphics screens to post on Commodore BBS's.

I look forward to seeing everyone there! :-)

Going through my stuff to see what I can bring (the challenge is I have to think small, no PETs, but maybe a laptop with a PET emulator).

So far, I have for sure:

- some new information on Flash Attack, I've done some dissecting of the original source, so I will have that available to present (it should be of interest to anyone working on those rrnet games). re: http://www.portcommodore.com/flashindex.php

- PET games demo, I'll show off some of best examples of PET games (don't be expecting too much, but interesting none the less) re: http://www.portcommodore.com/petscreens.php

- My hummer DTV -> mini 64 mod - So far they (2 of em) are just all the parts in a box but I hope to get one ready before CommVex. re: http://galaxy22.dyndns.org/dtv/common/hacks/index.html (mine is not on the list, but it gives you an idea)

- I can get together my Light Cycles game (I cleaned up the source code a few years back to put on the site, but never got that far yet) re: http://www.portcommodore.com/lightcycles.php

RW Bivins and his crew from Oldergames.com will be stopping by CommVEx, bringing the new action game, Silo 64, and possibly the older text games, Weird World and Weird World 2. Silo 64 looks interesting!

My DTV boxes now have the right holes in them and I got ribbon cables prepped, soldering on those tiny little boards will be a challenge, maybe this weekend. (I solder like a programmer :? )

At the June Fresno Commodore User Group meeting, Charles remarked that he would be doing demonstrations specifically on the User Port Commander and the Universal Video Module. Announced on comp.sys.cbm, he is also bringing in the Australian-made prototype of the Commodore 128 color 80-column-to-VGA adapter. The 8-Bit Designs catalog is at
